fyeahhistorymajorheraldicbeast:

He’s usually the culprit. But also Cecily Neville, or Elizabeth de Ferrers, or… all right, I spend a lot of time crying over historical figures.

Yeah, poor guy it’s a fascinating sad story. I’m surprised he hasn’t got a movie, although I suppose William Wallace has sucked up most peoples imaginations for those conflicts.

But yes, people ask me about Byzantium and I ask how long they are able to listen to me…

I bemoan the lack of education on the Byzantium Empire in the universities. At least the lack that exists in the curriculum of US universities I’ve seen.

This is what happens when you’re drunk and maudlin and realise that pretty soon there will be nobody left alive who has memories of the 1910s.

No tumblr, sorry.

“Love the fetus, hate the child.”

America makes it near impossible for a woman to stay autonomous—hard to get family planning resources/make the choice of getting an abortion, and harder to get child care support after the baby is born. Leaving women destitute and dependants everywhere.

Look at Canada! Not only do we give almost a full year off, it can be either maternity or paternity. That’s right, daddy can stay home with the baby while the mother goes back to work. And the leave can be also be split between them. For example, the mother could take six months, and then the father could take the other six. Did I also mention that the parent on leave continues to receive pay and is guaranteed their job back?

America get with it!

Oh my gosh this line, *shivers*! When Corkus said I never liked you and he says it’s because of Gut’s face. I thought it was supposed to be a joke then I scrolled down, and the line did a complete one eighty for me. Guts really is a symbol of human suffering, sadness, pain. He bears it mostly by himself, and the first time he is able to open up it backfires horribly. Corkus’ line really did make me think of Gut’s face, and I’ve noticed even when he has a mostly neutral expression, or even a smile he still looks like he has pain, sadness too. Miura, you are a genius.

Berserk Valentine’s Day Special

The most painful thing is losing yourself in the process of loving someone too much, and forgetting that you are special too.

Ernest Hemingway

This is so true for Casca with her relationship to Griffith. Great post Nature-Nymph!

charlestonmuseum:

Ida Morris Jervey is perhaps better known as “the Mushroom Lady.” She was born in 1861 to Thomas Morris and Emma Forney. Her father was a minister so the family moved a bit before settling in North Carolina. In 1886, she married Francis Johnstone Jervey, a Charlestonian, the son of Theodore Dehon Jervey and Ann Hume Simons. The couple had four children and, sadly, only ten years together before he died of tuberculosis. She too had fallen ill but recovered. According to the family, this experience evolved into a driving interest in mushrooms as she studied them for their medicinal properties. She was considered an authority on the subject and would teach, write and edit in an attempt to pass on her knowledge. Ida died in 1938 but she has left quite the legacy as the artwork displayed here shows.

Learn more about Ida Jervey and other women naturalists active in Charleston in this past presentation by our archivist, Jennifer Scheetz.

EPHEMERA FRIDAY: Each Friday we post a selection or small collection from our Archives. Some items may be on exhibit, some may be too fragile to display and some may be too unusual to fit into our typical Lowcountry exhibit themes. We will occasionally ask for help identifying people or places in photographs that have come to us with little or no information. We hope you enjoy our selection each week – do let us know if there’s something in particular you’d like to see on EPHEMERA FRIDAY.

For you Stern, yeah mushroom identification ^_^

“from failing, you learn. from success, not so much.”

This is great, I wish our grade schools, middle schools, high schools and college/universities would feel this way. I think learning and the whole process it has would be more fruitful and less painful and or stress inducing.

Alexander Hamilton, better known as “that guy on the American 10 dollar bill”
I am a straight male… I am extremely attracted to this man… I am soooooooo ok with that! :)

I feel the same way. He’s so handsome, and from what I’ve learned about him he was a pretty good guy. I always feel a little sad when I break a ten dollar bill. ;)
