Stumbled across this really useful tool for anyone doing NaNoWriMo or planning any writing schedule—Pacemaker.

You can customize a variety of settings for your word count schedule—like writing significantly more on the weekends, or less, taking a few days off, or even generate a random daily word count target. Then you can display the schedule by calendar, graph, or table and share it with others.

Plus you can adjust the date range, so if you fall behind, it’s easy to update the word count plan and catch up.

Check it out here.

Very cool!

Intense photos put Mexico’s growing crisis into vivid perspective

Tens of thousands of demonstrators flooded the streets of Mexico City on Thursday in one of the largest shows to date of public indignation over government corruption and the disappearance of 43 college students from the southern city of Iguala.

Demonstrators marched towards President Enrique Peña Nieto’s National Palace to protest his handling of the probable massacre. Hundreds of police in riot gear blocked access to the palace, where thousands of protesters gathered to demand justice for the students who disappeared on Sept. 26.

Contemporary Art Week!

Leo and Diane Dillon

Various Illustrations

Leo and Diane Dillon were one of the greatest illustration teams in the history of Fantasy Art. Books that have used their illustrations for cover or inside art include an edition of the Narnia books, Garth Nix’s Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen, Her Stories and The Girl Who Spun Gold by Virginia Hamilton, The Earthsea Trilogy by Ursula K. LeGuin, Aida by Leontyne Price, The Girl Who Dreamed Only Geese by Howard A. Norman, and many, many more.

There is a blog dedicated to archiving their work here.

I especially love the Medieval ones and second one is Sundiata Keita I believe.

Been rewatching Avatar and still have so much love for these characters. I enjoy thinking of Iroh meeting Zuko’s dragon, sometime after The Search. It would be a nice way of bringing the symbolism of the dragons in their story come full circle.

"While mamluks were purchased, their status was above ordinary slaves, who were not allowed to carry weapons or perform certain tasks. In places such as Egypt from the Ayyubid dynasty to the time of Muhammad Ali of Egypt, mamluks were considered to be ‘true lords’, with social status above freeborn Muslims."

I think this is something my readers would be interested in.

Mamluk history is kind of incredible, and you can read a lot more about it here. They were one of the most elite military forces in history-they fought in battles during the Crusades, during the formation of the Mongolian Empire, and were always a potent political force.

They had a very strict code of conduct, the Furusiyya (much like the Code of Chivalry) and there are illuminated manuscripts that survive with lovely illustrations.

image

Great emphasis was placed upon the Furusiyya – a word made up of the three elements:  the ‘ulum (science), funun (arts) and adab (literature) – of cavalry skills.

The Furusiyya was not dissimilar to the chivalric code of the Christian knight insofar as it included a moral code embracing virtues such as courage, valour, magnanimity and generosity; but it also addressed the management, training and care of the horses that carried the warrior into battle and provided him with leisure time sporting activities.

It also included cavalry tactics, riding techniques, armour and mounted archery. Some texts even discussed military tactics: the formation of armies, the use of fire and smoke screens. Even the treatment of wounds was addressed.

It’s also important to point out that the Mamluk Sultanate was an independent (not enslaved) political entity in Egypt, and that they played a great role in the interaction and politics of religion during the Crusades in the Mediterranean, Northern Africa, Central Asia, and other contested regions.

You can learn more about the interactions of Jewish, Muslim, and christian peoples under the Mamluk Sultanate here at the Jewish Virtual Library.

This is a great post that I just have to reblog! I remember reading about them during my Mongol seminar. The Mamluks come up in history repeatedly. They were active as a polity for so long. Around the turn of the century when Napoleon campaigned in Egypt he fought Mamluk soldiers and then hired a small number of them, who fought with the French armies in Spain. — Hayley ^_^

This is what it should mean to be a police officer. Everyone deserves to feel safe and protected, no matter their skin tone or cultural background.  If the officers currently serving aren’t like this, then something needs to be done now to make that change.

This is nice to see. There’s so much negativity about police officers and law enforcement lately, which I completely understand given the circumstances. But these guys here, these are real officers. Officers with compassion who actually do protect and serve the community however they can. When people say “not all cops” they are talking about the ones like this.

Are there differences between black actors’ opportunities and white actors’ opportunities? Yes, there are. It’s been said. I’d rather a young black actor read about success as opposed to how tough it was. I get these roles because I can act and that’s it.

Soooooo handsome!

The 12 Question Fiction Writing Conflict Test

As I wrote in 17 Ways To Make your Novel More Memorable, you need to structure your book as a roller-coaster ride. It should be a physical journey that forces your reader to vicariously experience a series of emotions. Pace it. Give us moments of respite and then throw us back into the action.

You need to give your protagonist and your antagonist story goals. These story goals should be in conflict with each other. Tell a story where your readers can empathise with both your hero and your villain. Make both of them memorable and interesting.

But how do you tell if you will have enough conflict in your novel?

Answer my conflict test and find out.
