Berserk, I Love It

Oh my goodness! I just read chapter 287 of Berserk, and I cried so hard. Guts and Casca break my heart. Their romance is so loving and sad, and I just get so many intense feelings around it. Admittedly I have some pretty complicated romantic matters in my own life, which may have Guts and Casca seep into my own experiences to a certain extent, but I’ve never had that much raw sadness hit me all at once from a fictional story. Miura Kentarou you are a brilliant author and artist, please just carry on with what your doing you wicked and wonderful genius!

Thank-you Foxflash! I couldn’t agree more! Yue was a wonderful character, I don’t think I’ve ever been so effected by a character in such a small length of time. She did wonderful things for Sokka’s character too. He had a bittersweetness and sense that he had failed, which really helped him become more than just comic relief.

Yue’s strength really reminds me of women of the past’s strength. She had a lot of circumstances weighted against her, but she used what power was offered to her and she wasn’t afraid to use it, although it would largely help the bigger picture and even be damaging to her.

I think one of the reasons Katara is such a popular character. Is because her strength as a woman is more easily recognizable to many young women watching ATLA today. She tough and can hold her own, and stands on equal footing with her male counter parts, and if she doesn’t, we’ll know she cross about it! Yue’s strength is just as potent, but it’s more quiet and works within the system she was born to. Yue was a kind and brave person, who I think would have made her sacrifice regardless of many things. At the same time I wonder if it was part of the reason to she came to the decision so quickly and with such determination, was due to her understanding of the choices and nature of women’s power in her time and cultural place.

All ATLA fans are totally welcome to their own feelings on characters, and I can see, how on first glance Yue might appear to be a Mary Sue. This is just some food for thought on one of the most complex character and plot moves of the story. I thought in the past about writing a full blown essay on Princess Yue, but I still haven’t done it. Maybe I should? There’s a lot to talk about there :D

#i dare anyone tell me yue wasn’t a warrior in her own right #just look at her face in this gif #she sacrificed herself for her people willingly and without hesitation

she was just a little Mary Sue

is it because she’s pretty? is because she’s a princess? is it because sokka loved her? what are you basing this on? she is the daughter of a leader who has resisted war for 100 years. she knows her responsibilities to her people. she even tried to stop herself from seeing sokka, even though she desperately wanted to, to keep her engagement and her family’s honor intact. in three episodes, she was shown to be a kind person who was in a position she didn’t like, but had to accept because that’s what she was born to do. this is what the spirit gave her life for. she is a leader. she is a martyr. she may not have thrown daggers or bended fire, but she did what she could for the people she loved. and not just the people she loved. the loss of the moon would have completely damaged both the spirit world and the four nations. she had to clean up the actions of one rash general trying desperately to climb into power. the war would have ended right there, at the battle of the northern water tribe, if she had not sacrificed herself. she realized that her lifeforce was only borrowed, that she had a debt to the spirits and a duty to the world to do what was right. she could have easily run away. no one wanted her to die. no one was forcing her to give herself up. she did not even need to be asked. she knows that there is something bigger than her, even bigger than her tribe, at stake and she walked into her death bravely. how many people would make that ultimate sacrifice? in three episodes, we were shown the single bravest character in all of atla. sorry that she couldn’t stick around to fit whatever standards you have for characters, she was too busy sacrificing herself saving the world to travel around the world with the gaang and have fun adventures.

One of the things I love about comics which pass over a long period of time, is you get to see a character grow and change in the art. It’s hard to express the same thing in a novel, and it really makes the characters even more real to me, because you’ve watched them grow and change in a very visual and emotional way. Berserk is a great example of this, as this chart shows.

Guts/Casca Fan Fiction

Oh my gosh Holly this is lovely lovely work, very in character and—just heart squeezey. I don’t think I’ve ever loved a couple this much and I haven’t found much fan fiction for them, so it’s really nice to find some fantastic fanfic for them. One just really has to vent those Guts + Casca feelings sometimes. ^_^

I’m really tempted to write some Guts/Casca pieces myself. I’m not familiar with writing fan fiction, I’m always afraid I’ll portay characters out of character, or that I can’t do it justice. On the other hand I just want more Guts and Casca material so badly, because they make me feel so strongly that I should make some.

I can’t wait for Elfhelm, arrrgh. Hopefully this thing’ll still be able to fit in with canon by the time we get there. If not, whatever. I just need to vent some Guts/Casca feelings.

Longest thing I’ve written so far, too.

Casca’s POV this time.

———

All she needed was space. The chaos of the last few days had been overwhelming. They didn’t understand, those people. They couldn’t. It might as well have been just last night that absolute terror had gripped her heart, and now she was thrust upon some foreign land with foreign realities and foreign people who were too eager to meet her. It was too much.

At last, she had found it. Casca had come across a solitary little beach, surrounded by crags. She had placed her shoes, unfamiliar shoes, closer inland and sat down on the shore. Time became an illusion as she simply waited, alone except for the tumbling sea and circling gulls.

Heavy footsteps behind her snapped Casca out of her trance. She turned to look at her visitor: the only recognizable face in this strange new world.

You go Rachel Maddow, tell  it like it is1 This gal is great I really like hearing what she has to say. I can’t help but shout this out because I feel very strongly about the matter of health care, or lack thereof, in the United States. Having lived in a place where health care isn’t privatized, it was a much more of a reassuring position.

Another Berserk related entry, I am really fangirling it up lately. I can’t seem to help myself. It did help me to do something I’ve been wanted to do for the past six years, post a video to my youtube channel! It’s a pretty noobie simple little video, but I had lots of fun making it, and the song Sorrow by the National really reminded me of Guts and his current situation with his love. I hope it’s nice and not boring or corny :3

Can a sister get a ‘HELL FUCKIN YEAH!’ For my buddy Scott, who protected a woman from her abusive ex! Scott was in the hospital for 8 days! The Asshat attacked him with a box cutter. Nose cut 3/4”, stabbed in the arm (16 stitches), the slash across his chest went through to his left lung puncturing it (30 staples)… He is much better now, but he has a lot of nerve damage across his chest and forearm where he was stabbed. He’s got a long way to go. Let’s see how many reblogs/RTs we can get for this BAMF!

I’d like to start by saying I don’t like these types of photos at all. Seeing senseless harm done to animals sickens me. When I first viewed this photo it saddened me extremely… it’s a powerful photo for many reasons. The torero breaks down as he realizes his relentless cruelty to an animal that wished to peacefully survive. There is  a story behind the photo that made me feel it was worth sharing.

This incredible photo marks the end of Matador Torero Alvaro Munera’s career. He collapsed in remorse mid-fight when he realized he was having to prompt this otherwise gentle beast to fight. He went on to become an avid opponent of bullfights.

Torero Munera is quoted as saying of this moment: “And suddenly, I looked at the bull. He had this innocence that all animals have in their eyes, and he looked at me with this pleading. It was like a cry for justice, deep down inside of me. I describe it as being like a prayer - because if one confesses, it is hoped, that one is forgiven. I felt like the worst shit on earth.”

Eurasian Steppe Appreciation / I think I want to live in a yurt post!

Hi’a Everyone!

I thought I would do a post talking about the Eurasian steppe a little, and how cozy yurts look to live in. Ever since my Eurasian reading seminar and my Mongol seminar I’ve been really fascinated with the time, place, and people. I’ve always had a thing about horse warriors, hence a love of antiquity Roman cavalry and knights as well. I also really like the overall astetic of the Eurasian steppe / Central Asia. Here’s some pretties, to show the awesome!

I don’t know if perhaps I’m romanticizing the subsistence strategy of pastoral nomads, but the lifestyle really appeals to me, and the yurts look to be super comfy and great romantic meetings. On one hand though I’ve only ever stayed in yurt on a coastal campsite so I’m not sure what a more “real” yurt might feel like. According tohttp://www.aroundtheyurt.com/What_is_A_Yurt/Yurt_Examples.aspx there are four different forms of yurt. The Mongolian Ger style, the Kyrgyz yurt, modern canvas Ger style yurt, and the Turkmenistan style, which seems to have an interesting outer reed and or thin wood screen around the outer wall. Now for more pictures!

A more traditional interior view

Also much to my squeeing Eugene Oregon makes a yurt that is so much like something I’ve wanted to live in since I was a little girl, and would be totally great for a bigger family while sticking to western privacy feelings. I love this design! ^_^

Anyroad, that is my post about yurt and steppe appreciation!
