Today in Maritime History
The RMS Lusitania of the Cunard line was torpedoed and sank 100 years ago today, taking with her 1,200 people. In Britain, the tragedy caused rioters to target German businesses, and in the U.S. public opinion was swayed toward war when hearing that about 130 Americans were among those who perished aboard the liner.
These images are from SSHSA archives, the Everett E. Viez collection, showing the RMS Lusitania, a funeral, and survivors of the sinking.
