Now, this theory might be a little bit out there, but whenever I look at these panels, I always get this sneaky suspicion and ask myself if Casca might have known that she was pregnant at this point. She’s visibly upset about what had just happened in the wagon with Griffith, and she’s also making up her decision on whether to stay with Griffith or go with Guts, but Casca’s also holding her abdomen area. Knowing that she was carrying her lover’s child would have made her ultimate decision of staying with Griffith and telling Guts to proceed on his journey alone would have made it all the more heartbreaking for her (and, it would have made the events of the eclipse even more horrifying).
Now, one thing that could knock this theory down is that morning sickness doesn’t occur until a few weeks into gestation, and as far as we’ve known, Casca’s only been pregnant for about a week or so. Unless Miura was using an artistic license to excuse this, but we all know the answer to that:
On the other hand, if Casca was expecting her period around this time
and it’s so funny that her period hasn’t been used as a plot device since volumes 6 and 7and she missed it, then Casca could have at least been speculating the possibility that she was pregnant by putting two and two together after sleeping with Guts, so there’s that.In the end, I’m still going to make this face when reading volume 14:
D:
She knew….
She fucking knew…
When I made my MMV for Guts and Casca a little while ago. I noticed this stubble little panel, and I was like oh no, she at least had an inkling that she was pregnant. I think the original poster is right about it being to soon for morning sickness, but she may have missed her period by this point. Poor thing I feel so sympathetic for her. She caught between two men she has immense feelings for, and then discovering she’s pregnant by Guts and feeling she has to stay with Griffith gosh no wonder she cried. Casca really can’t catch a break, much like Guts.
